The Big Society – the rhetoric and the reality

The stark contrast between the rhetoric and reality of Big Society is summarised in the following table.

Rhetoric Reality
David Cameron promised: ‘more of what you want’ (i.e. services).
Enable a diversity of service providers, including new entrants, to reduce reliance on government services and increase the voluntary sector’s involvement.
Foster localism; more freedom and local control.
Support community initiatives: ‘The Big Society bank will lend money and grant money to organisations that want to expand and grow and do brilliant things.’
Encourage volunteerism and a more ‘socially active’ Britain: ‘Citizens have a moral obligation to volunteer and fulfill their civic duties.’
