Newcastle Labor feels music love

Newcastle Labor Councillors are backing a push for the NSW party platform to include support for live music venues including planning controls to protect long-running venues from noise complaints, writes Ben Smee in the Newcastle Herald.

Delegates to this weekend's NSW Labor conference are calling on party members to support a new "Labor Loves Live Music" campaign.

Lord mayoral candidate Nuatali Nelmes said yesterday she backed the move and that Newcastle should work towards reviving its legendary music scene.

"We used to have a thriving music scene, but the pokies and other factors killed that off," Cr Nelmes said.

Six of Newcastle's famous rock pubs - the Civic Hotel (formerly the Hunter on Hunter), Empire Hotel, Jolly Roger, Star Hotel, Lucky Country Hotel and The View Factory ) - have closed since poker machines.
